Our Palm Positive Plan

Mars is on a journey to transform how we source palm oil.

Today palm oil is used in more than half the world’s packaged goods, across both food and personal care items. And, when produced sustainably, palm can deliver value through the entire supply chain. But, the old way of doing things – buying the lowest cost commodities – just won’t do if we are to address and ultimately fix a broken supply chain. As buyers, we have an opportunity to drive social and environmental change that can make things better for people and for the planet that we share.

Through Mars’ Palm Positive Plan, launched in September 2019, we have made sweeping transformations to our palm supply chain to deliver deforestation-free palm oil and advance respect for human rights.

Through simplification and verification – a radical simplification of Mars’ supply chain taking mill count from 1500 to fewer than 100 by 2021, and path to further halve that in 2022; collaboration on the ground - working with stakeholders in high-stakes geographies and fragile ecosystems toward successful, sustainable smallholder farming; and acting beyond our direct supply - awarding longer-term contracts to suppliers who commit to transparent supply chains; our ambition is to make long-lasting change for the environment, workers, smallholder farmers and economies where palm oil is sourced.

Built on the foundations of the Mars’ global Human Rights Policy, Deforestation Policy and Supplier Code of Conduct, the Palm Positive Plan is the collective approach to how these policies will be implemented across our palm oil supply chain.
