Greening our Operations and Transforming Key Supply Chains

Mars Takes Climate Action

The science is clear – climate change is real, and around the world people are already beginning to feel the effects.

In order to be Sustainable in a Generation, we continuously look at the best-available science, which tells us we must reduce the total (greenhouse gas) GHG emissions across our value chain 27 percent by 2025 and achieve Net Zero by 2050 (from 2015 levels), to do our part to keep the planet from exceeding a temperature increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius. You can read more about our recent commitment here and we’ll be updating this page as we develop our carbon roadmap in compliance with the Science Based Target Initiative. Here’s how we are working towards that goal today:

  • Mars previously committed to a science-based target to reduce our full value chain emissions 27% by 2025 and 67% (two-thirds) by 2050, from 2015 levels. This target is aligned with the global goal in the Paris Agreement to keep climate change "well below" 2 degrees Celsius. We have now committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, but we remain committed to a 27% emissions reduction by 2025 and we will soon set a target for 2030.
  • Mars is already using or purchasing renewable electricity to cover more than 50% of our total electricity footprint, including 100% at our sites in Australia, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Lithuania, Mexico, Poland, Spain and United Kingdom. We're on track to add India to this list by the end of 2021. Beyond these 11 countries, we are working to increase our renewable electricity sourcing and exploring a renewable thermal pilot project.
  • As part of our full value chain goal, Mars set a target to reduce our direct operations emission (i.e. from our factories and offices) 42% by 2025 and reaching net-zero emissions (a 100% net reduction) by 2040.

Transforming Supply Chains To Protect Our Climate

To fully tackle our GHG emissions, we are working to improve how food is produced throughout our extended supply chain. Three quarters of our full value chain carbon footprint comes from agricultural and land use change emissions associated with the ingredients we source to make our products.

We are working to transform key supply chains by partnering with suppliers, farmers and others to prevent deforestation and produce ingredients more efficiently for a lower carbon footprint. Sustainable agricultural practices or regenerative agriculture practices, such as efficient irrigation, resilient crops, and increased soil health will not only improve environmental impacts, but also help farmers thrive.

In addition, collaborations with suppliers and farmers, large and small, will be critical to making progress to prevent deforestation. We’re working with them to ensure that

growing key ingredients doesn’t destroy forests or degrade natural lands and explore opportunities to sequester carbon in soil and trees, so that we can protect forests for generations to come.
